A Plan for Supporting our Immigrant Friends and Neighbors

First Presbyterian Church of Southold
When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing
among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself. Leviticus 19:33-24

The Presbytery of Long Island, on behalf of its member churches, recently reaffirmed its longstanding Biblical commitment to welcome the stranger and to seek justice for people in need of care or refuge. It also recalled that Jesus and his family were refugees, thus it is “fundamental to our faith that we act to protect other immigrant families at risk.”

As people of faith and people of conscience, the Congregation of Southold Presbyterian Church affirms the ancient Biblical practice of sanctuary, offering gestures and tangible signs of mercy and love, and pledges to follow this precept of our faith by doing all we can to help our immigrant neighbors and to create and enact upon the following:
  • Foster a relationship between our congregation and the congregation of Pastor David Menjivar of the Iglesia Mas Que Vencedores in East Marion.
  • Identify means by which to the best of our ability we can help with the physical needs of members of our Spanish-speaking immigrant community.
  • Work, in cooperation with the North Fork Spanish Apostolate, to educate and recruit members to:

  1. 1. Train to serve as witnesses, accompanying undocumented immigrants to nearby courts as a support person.
  2. 2. Act as assistants on occasions deemed appropriate such as purchasing a car or major appliance, doctor appointments, DMV actions, school parent teacher meetings, or lease signings.
  3. 3. Assist the North Fork Spanish Apostolate in the preparation of laminated identification cards at their offices in Riverhead. The demand for these cards has been overwhelming of late.
Love thy neighbor as thyself. Mark 12:31
